Microsoft Dynamics GP, or how it was historically known Great Plains Dynamics, is very robust mid-market Corporate ERP application, with rich Distribution business logic.  It should be a good fit for the company with extensive and even complex Logistics and Warehouse related operations.  We will review Distribution modules, typically deployed in Warehouse Management day-to-day routines and how they could be opened for barcode scanning.  If you are relatively new to the topic and making your first steps, we also recommend you to read our earlier publications on Warehouse Management System typical functionality, plus probably read some theory on the WMS from independent sources

1. Sales Order Allocation or Fulfillment in Dynamics GP.  This is done in Sales Order Processing transaction entry screen.  By default when you enter SOP Order or Invoice line, it is allocated automatically – and this is what you need to change, if you send warehouse worker to pick and pack the Sales Order.  You create special SOP Order or Invoice type, where allocation is manual.  In this case WMS worker could go downstairs to the warehouse and allocate either by picking and keying in the quantity directly to Dynamics GP SOP screen or use barcode scanner (see Warehouse Management System realization in Great Plains below)

2. Inventory Transfers, Stock Count, Adjustments.  Dynamics GP has Inventory Transfer and Adjustment forms, where you do these routines, as well as Inventory Cycle Count (which works the same way as adjustment, but allow you to do mass adjustment based on the counted quantities – typically every month end or the quarter)

3. Stock Replenishment is done in Purchase Order Processing module, where you have POP Purchase Receipt transaction.  Optionally you can match item received again open Purchase Orders, or just allow PP Receipt without negotiation with your suppliers via Requisition, followed by Purchase Order.  If requisition logic and hierarchical approvers structure (typically in large publicly traded corporation), we recommend you to review Requisition Management module, available in Dynamics GP Business Portal (web based application, where BP user licenses are normally lower in cost and you can involve RM for larger number of purchasers, who are not necessary Dynamics GP User)

4. Warehouse Management System or how to open Dynamics GP Distribution logic for barcoding.  In our paper we recommend you to deploy WMS add-on, which has client application, running directly on your barcode scanner (in graphical mode of Windows Mobile, or in text mode – when you are OK with cheaper version of the scanner without graphics) and it talks to WMS server, which in turn pulls and pushes records from/to Dynamics GP SOP, POP and Inventory modules

5. Where Sales and Purchase Orders are Originated: eCommerce, EDI, Manual Entry and sent to you via Fax, etc.  Manual orders are simple and out of question, however EDI (Electronic Document Interchange) might require some custom logic.  We recommend reasonably priced (or even budget) EDI solution, where we use add-on with setup logic to configure EDI protocol, FTP address, submitted/processed files directories.  EDI originated orders are ready for Warehouse workers for picking and packing (order fulfillment).  If you wish your B2B or B2C ecommerce orders to be automatically submitted to Dynamics GP and being ready for fulfillment in the warehouse, we recommend ecommerce add-on, which works with major ecommerce shopping carts, such as Magento/PHP, ASP.Net Storefront and others

6. Second opinion in Dynamics GP implementation for mid-size distributor.  As you may know Microsoft Business Solutions has several levels of Dynamics GP Partners (Certified Partner, Gold Certified, etc.).  However Great Plains is Accounting application with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll with HR, Manufacturing and Distribution set of module (not the full list of module, just for illustration).  Corporate ERP application resellers use pretty strong sales techniques, where they might go over their current certification and experience and sell something, where they expect to allow some learning curve.  This is probably one of the typical reasons for Dynamics GP implementation to end up in limbo, especially in such technology oriented (barcoding, POS, RFID, ecommerce shopping carts) environments as Warehouse Management for nationwide distribution company.  We are comfortable to provide second opinion in Great Plains technologically challenging projects, where you may expect moderate or heavy Dexterity Customizations, eConnect programming, Integration Manager data conversions, SQL data integration, EDI coding

7. Current Version of Microsoft Dynamics GP.  Version 2010 (also sometimes referred, especially in About Microsoft Dynamics GP screen as version 11.0) was released in April 2010 just in time of Microsoft Convergence 2010 tradeshow in Atlanta.  At this point of time (September 2010) majority of the customers are on version 10.0, and lesser number are on version 9.0.  Earlier versions, such as Dynamics GP 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, Great Plains Dynamics/eEnterprise 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.0 and Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Mac are no longer supported.  If you think that your organization is committed to Great Plains Dynamics GP Corporate MRP platform, and considering the fact, that Warehouse Management System software licenses, hardware (mostly barcoding scanners and label printers) and implementation consulting/programming hours are comparable to Dynamics GP user licenses cost – we recommend you to be on the current version, prior to jumping into WMS and Barcoding for Dynamics GP World

8. Dynamics GP WMS implementation for the International subsidiary.  We recommend you to give us a call to understand if Great Plains Dynamics is localized and available for the targeted country or region, the options to enable Dynamics GP for international users (we often recommend to host Great Plains on the Microsoft SQL Server bearing Windows Server in the Headquarters in USA/Canada/UK or wherever it is located and provide user access via Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Server).  In some countries, especially with the alphabet, requiring Unicode (Hieroglyphs – Chinese, Japanese, Korean) there is the challenge to enter and store hieroglyph characters in Dynamics GP interface directly, you need to deploy Asian characters add-ons for Dynamics GP, such as NJ Star.  This example should illustrate Dynamics GP possible issues, when you are trying to deploy the same software licenses for your international branches  - so expect some homework

9. How to contact us.  Please call us 1-866-528-0577, or email us help@albaspectrum.com  We are happy to give you Dynamics GP Presentation, specially designed to reflect your business processes.  We serve you USA and Canada nationwide and internationally via remote support and web sessions.  Local service is available in Illinois, Michigan, California, Texas

There has been a controversy for some time on the health risks that cell phones pose to humans through their use. While many have claimed most studies to be inconclusive a new recent study has been conducted that claims to have proven and shown an increase in cancer risks through the use of cell phones.

In Stockholm, Sweden a recent study conducted by the Karolinska Institute found that there was an increased risk of brain cancer in certain parts of the brain through the regular use of cell phones. The study consisted of 634 subjects over a two year period. Of the subjects 209 already had brain tumors and 425 were completely healthy. This most recent study took place over a 2 year period and showed that increased microwaves from the cell phones did indeed pose a health risk to the brain. Due to the small amount of subjects however a larger study is being done with 3,000 subjects with results due out late in 2009.

While it is not good to fall into a hysteria over every study, enough studies have been done on microwaves to prove that microwaves themselves can indeed pose serious health risks. Cell phones emit microwaves, it’s simple as that.

The FDA claims that cell phones pose no real serious threat to the public however the FDA allows drugs each year to be administered to the public that later get recalled for their dangerous side effects. Common sense will show you that the FDA is not always right when it comes to our safety, so using the FDA as a reliable source for safety information is not my first choice. I prefer to listen to the scientists rather than a government agency that in my opinion is flawed.

Without going into a panic and trashing your cell phone there are some steps to help reduce your microwave exposure from your cellular device. Following these steps may not entirely eliminate the risks but can significantly reduce them.

Step One – Trash Your Analog Phone

Okay, so I said don’t go trashing your cell phone in a panic. All I can say is oops. If you are using an analog cell phone you are increasing your microwave exposure by up to three times the normal compared to digital cell phone usage. If you have a concern for your health you will want to switch to a digital phone which has been shown to have a significant decrease in microwave exposure compared to analog.

Step Two – Use an Ear Piece or Bluetooth

This step has an obvious benefit. By using an ear piece you are directing the microwave exposure away from your head where the vulnerable area of the brains have been shown to have the risk factors. Ear pieces are fairly inexpensive (.00) and are considered more acceptable for driving use as well. Many laws have been passed requiring the use of earpieces during driving due to safety concerns so you actually are getting two birds with one stone here. Your cell phone may have even came with an ear piece already so now is the time to dust that baby off and take it for a run. Bluetooth can be pricier but the quality of communication is enhanced for talking in respects to earpieces.

Step Three – Check Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)

SAR is the amount of radio waves absorbed by your body through cell phone use. The FCC has a regulation standard of 1.6 watts or lower per kilogram of flesh weight. Cnet did some recent research on actual SAR levels with cell phones and these were the overall winners for the lowest SAR levels:

CELL PHONE LIMIT SAR 1.6

LG KG800 SAR 0.135

Motorola Razr V3x SAR 0.14

Nokia 9300 SAR 0.21

Nokia N90 SAR 0.22

Samsung SGH-G800 SAR 0.23

Samsung Sync SGH-A707 SAR 0.236

Nokia 7390 SAR 0.26

Samsung SGH-T809 SAR 0.32

Samsung SGH-E910 SAR 0.33

Motorola Razr2 V8 SAR 0.36

Step Four – Don’t Give Kids Cell Phones

With so many studies and controversy over the cell phone slash brain cancer issue it is best to not have a young developing child own a cell phone. This is somewhat problematic because a cell phone can actually increase safety in respect to emergencies and parent to child contact. I say if you must give a child a cell phone make sure they use earpieces, have a cell phone lowest on the SAR level, and limit their use to emergencies.

Step Four – Reduce Usage

We have become reliant on our cell phones and perhaps it’s time we start using them less. This of course is a personal decision and relies on how important this issue is to you. Some call the issue a media scare while others claim it’s an urgent health issue. As a free American it is up to you to decide from the facts if a cell phone is causing you harm. I always say better safe than sorry and you have to admit, how urgent are most of your cell phone calls?

If you are working in retail business and plan to deploy Microsoft RMS as your Point of Sale and Store Management system with back office on Microsoft Dynamics GP, this orientation is for you.  You may be already ware that there is integration (Great Plains Dexterity add-on), which comes with Great Plains Dynamics GP purchase.  This integration does very simple but reliable job, sending Daily Sales into GP General Ledger batch, plus it integrates AP transactions (as you may prefer to do merchandise restocking directly in MS RMS Store Operations or Headquarters modules, but you would probably like to keep AP check cutting from your Corporate ERP application, which is Dynamics GP).  If this is exactly what you need, please call to your Microsoft Dynamics GP Reseller or Consultant to discuss this Microsoft RMS to Dynamics GP integration acquisition and implementation.  If this simplicity doesn’t do the job for you, here are other options to consider:

1. Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing (Purchase Receipts), Inventory Control (adjustments and transfer) synchronization between MS RMS and Dynamics GP.  This is pretty complete possibly integration scenario.  You send all your daily POS transactions from all your stores (after they are transferred overnight or hourly into your RMS Headquarters database).  Purchase Receipts could be done either in RMS or in Dynamics GP directly (in the case of Great Plains Purchase Receipts you can get advantage of more flexible barcode labels printing options, for example, plus they could be matched against Purchase Orders and even with some negotiation activity in Dynamics GP Business Portal Requisition Management module).  The same is possible with Inventory moves (from one RMS store to another or from one Dynamics GP Inventory Site to another)

2. RMS to Great Plains integration settings.  Here you really have more than other products could offer.  If your business has pretty complicated legal structure, where you one of your companies may own one or more RMS sales outlets, you can map one or more of your RMS stores to be associated with the GP Site (or multiple sites) in the one of the GP companies.  You can keep your expansion practice being flexible and purchase companies, without the need to fold them into your family owned company, just transfer them to Dynamics GP and Microsoft RMS platforms

3. Light version – integration of RMS POS transactions as AR Invoices and Returns.  In this case you do not bother to track your inventory items quantities, QTY Sold, Returned, Available in the Warehouse.  All you want to do is to track POS transactions distribution on precise GL Sales Accounts (in this case you can control your P&L directly in Financial Reporting, such as FRx or Microsoft Management Reporter, available for new version of GP 2010)

4. Integration Performance.  Alba Spectrum Integration between Dynamics GP and Microsoft RMS is coded exclusively in SQL Server Stored procedures, meaning that it is designed for ultimate volume of POS and Purchase Receipt/Inventory Adjustment and Transfer transactions, comparing to the competitive products coded in Microsoft Dexterity (Shell, specially programmed in C programming language with its own proprietary coding language Sanscript, where database manipulations are done via Dex cursors) or eConnect (this Dynamics GP SDK follows and replicates Dexterity source code business logic with 100% validation, where some of the performance might be slowed)

5. Versions supported.  Integration was introduced for Great Plains Dynamics and eEnteprise 7.5 on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft RMS 1.2.  Current version is available (for Dynamics GP 2010 or 10.0 and MS RMS 2.0).  As general recommendation, we suggest you to upgrade to current (or minus one) of Microsoft Dynamics GP and MS RMS, as if you do try to implement this tandem on older versions, chances are high that you will be paying extra price for technical support and possible fixes down the road

6. Dynamics GP Warehouse Management System as complete barcoding solution for your stores.  As an addition to the integration described above, in the case when you are mod-size retail and distribution chain, we suggest you to consider Dynamics GP WMS extensions.  This product works out of Dynamics GP Databases and naturally open such Great Plains business logics as SOP Sales Order, POP Purchase Receipt, Inventory transaction and transfer to barcode scanning

7. Recovering unsuccessful Dynamics GP implementation in retail environment.  If you are not happy (or up to the point to say frustrated) with your implementation progress, there might be various factors in place, including your next Corporate ERP selection homework lapses, the lack of industry expertise of your chosen Dynamics GP Partner or Consultant (typically we, consultants in ERP consulting community are trying the best to help you out, but from time to time we over estimate our ability to learn new product as the implementation happens).  Whatever was the reason, we are happy to review your case and give you second opinion

8. Give us a call: 1-866-528-0577, help@albaspectrum.com.  Local service in Illinois, Michigan, California, Texas.  We are positioned to do remote support for Dynamics GP implementations and Warehouse Management System user training.  International support is possible, our consultants speak Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese.  Our general customer profile is small and mid-sized retail stores USA, Canada nationwide, here we serve via short visits onsite for the implementation and user training and following remote support via web sessions and phone conferences

`Etiquettes maketh a man`, goes the famous saying. Indeed, it is very essential to be courteous to the people around us. However, many of us seem to be forgetful of the etiquettes at times. Among all kinds of etiquette errors that are commonly noticeable among people, lack of cell phone etiquette is growingly ubiquitous these days. As cell phones have entered the lifestyle of the common people, many are being increasingly found to be breaking the rules that apply to the society we live in.

This article introduces you to a number of cell phone etiquettes that every cell phone holder must be aware of. You will be surprised to find that not many of us are even familiar with all the mobile phone manners that are considered a must-know. Following is a list of behaviors that the cell phone users must know about.

Be Polite To The People Around You

There are places that you can`t escape from very easily. Hence, you should not use your cell phones for talking to people there. For instance, talking to someone on phone while you are using a lift can be considered impolite. Similarly, places like hospitals, public transports, job interviews, museums, funerals, places of worship, airplanes are also situations where you should not consider using you cell phones to talk with others. Since it is difficult to mention all the places where you should apply your cell phone etiquettes, you should use your common sense to choose situations. However, a 10-feet distance is usually considered as a norm if your call is too important to turn down.

Keep Your Volume Down

Many cell phone users usually leave their cell phone on with loud and outlandish ring tones even at places where others might easily get disturbed. Worse, they talk very loudly on their cell phones. Usually, all standard cell phones have been designed in a way to allow the user hear even wisher of the voice and similar sounds. Hence, it is unnecessary to talk in a louder voice with others. Should you feel that your voice is not audible to the person at the other end, choose a place away from others to talk on your cell phones. As mentioned earlier, usually a 10-feet distance will do. However, sometimes, the voice becomes inaudibly low due to the cell phone network error. Cancel the call and try dialing again in such situations.

Keep Your Conversation Brief and To The Point

There are situations too formal to take calls on your cell phones, and there are some calls too important to turn down. In such cases, you should ensure that you shorten your call as short as possible. However, gently excuse yourself from others while you decide to take that urgent call. Alternatively, you can activate the voicecall option on your cell phone, say during a meeting, to allow your callers to leave their messages for you.

Turn Off Your Cell Phone During Public Performances

Although these places are too obvious too talk about, many cell phone users still leave their cell phones switched on thereby causing unnecessary disturbance to others. Places like cinema theaters, plays, and ballets are a place for public entertainment where people come to refresh themselves. Pay respect to them and keep your cell phone either switched off or on vibration mode. If you want to receive or make a call during the show, you should leave your seat and go away from the earshot of the audience.

Take Off The Earpiece While You`re Not On Calls

Many cell phone users continue to wear their wireless earpiece accessory even when they are not on calls. Apart from looking awkward, it often makes others feel that you are not giving your entire attention to the people interacting with you. Make sure you take off your wireless earpiece device after you are done with your calls.

Taking care of your cell phone etiquettes can be extremely useful in building up a healthy personality and fortifying your social relationship. Therefore, you must observe them yourself apart from reminding others if you fell they are breaking the cell phone etiquettes, taking others for granted.
